Description: When you hear the words study the Bible, what thoughts come to mind? Intimidating. Exciting. Boring. Confusing. It’s so big! Where do I start? Most likely, all of these thoughts have crossed your mind at some point in your journey with the Bible. Some of you have studied the Bible your entire life, while others are new to the Bible. Wherever you are in your journey, know that the Bible contains God’s very words for you. Jesus longs for you to know Him, and He has revealed himself through His Word. Psalm 119:130 says, “The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.” You do not have to be a Bible scholar to understand God’s Word, since even the simple can understand. Be encouraged! We can know God through reading His Word. And then we seek to know Him, He has promised us understanding. All throughout Scripture, we see the word “root” to which signifies a source of life or strength. The roots of a plant are where it gets its nourishment and what keeps it from falling over. We believe that in order to grow and thrive in our relationship with Jesus, we need to be rooted in the Word of God because it is our source of life and strength. For the five weeks, we will learn how to study the Bible by reading through the book of Philippians. This study will not focus solely on the content of Philippians but rather the art of studying the Bible. We will use the book of Philippians as a means to help us engage with the Scriptures and learn how to dig deep into the text. The first week will focus on a specific method for examining the Bible. Over the four following weeks, we will apply that method as we study one chapter in Philippians each week. Our approach will be the same for each chapter of Philippians. At times, it will seem like the week-to-week process is fairly repetitive. We ask a lot of the same questions and do a lot of the same steps. But that’s what makes Scripture so amazing—it always produces powerful truths for us to live by. So as we go through each day, know that even if we are asking the same questions, God reveals different things in different passages of His Word. And those things bring us life. Our prayer is that this process instills new ways of thinking, observing, and interacting with scripture. We hope you will absorb this technique and learn to apply it to Bible text as if it’s second nature.
